When I first started my Airbnb journey, I was a 19-year-old straight out of high school with no background in real estate or business. To many, family & friends included I was shooting for something bigger than I could accomplish. But in my heart, I knew I was more than capable! Today, as I share my story, I hope to inspire those who might be struggling with self-doubt and the terrible feeling of being an "imposter" in your chosen field ✨
What is Imposter Syndrome?
Imposter Syndrome is a psychological pattern where you can doubt your achievements, skills, and talents. They often harbor a fear of being "found out" or exposed as a fraud. It's a voice inside saying, "Do I really belong here?” “Am I worthy of these accomplishments?"
Imposter Syndrome does not discriminate. From fresh college graduates to CEOs, many brilliant minds have confessed to feeling like a sham at various points in their careers.
Enjoy The Journey
Your journey, like mine with Airbnb, will be filled with highs and lows. Imposter Syndrome might visit you from time to time, but don't let it overstay its welcome. Instead, use it as a reminder to check in with yourself, and keep pushing forward.
Your dreams, passion, and potential are valid. So the next time you feel like an "imposter," remember that even the most successful ventures start with a simple dream. And that dream, no matter how big, can indeed become a reality - and I am living proof of that statement. 18 units in less than a year at 20 years old, who would’ve thought?
How To Embrace Your Potential📈
Acknowledge the Feelings: Recognize and label your feelings as Imposter Syndrome. This simple acknowledgment can kill its power over you.
Celebrate Small Wins: Keep a record of your achievements, no matter how “small” or “pointless” they may seem. These serve as tangible evidence against self-doubt.
Seek Mentorship: Surround yourself with individuals who have walked the path before you. Entrepreneurship can be lonely, surround yourself with people on the same journey as you.
Reframe Negative Thoughts: Instead of saying, "I don't know how to do this," say, "I will learn how to do this." Instead of saying, “I have no experience with Airbnb how can I be successful?” say, “I may be new to Airbnb but just like everyone else I am capable of figuring it out myself.”
Remember, Everyone Has Their First: Every expert, leader, and Airbnb host had their first project, first failure, and first success. Your journey is no different.
Imposter Syndrome Flip Card Challenge
Objective: The aim of this game is to flip your negative, imposter-related thoughts into positive affirmations as you progress through this blog!
Instructions:
1️⃣Prepare 5 small cards or sticky notes. On one side, write the common imposter syndrome thoughts listed below. On the other side, leave it blank for now.
Common Imposter Thoughts:
"I don't belong here."
"I'm a fraud."
"I just got lucky."
"They'll find out I'm not that skilled."
"I don't deserve this success."
2️⃣Place these cards next to you as you read the blog. Every time you resonate with a sentiment mentioned in the blog, take the related card.
3️⃣ Flip the script! On the blank side of the card, counter the negative thought with a positive affirmation inspired by what you're reading or recalling from your personal experiences.
Example:
"I don't belong here." -> "I've earned my place here with my dedication and unique perspective."
4️⃣Review & Reflect: At the end of the blog, take a look at your transformed cards. Reflect on the positive affirmations you've created, and remember to use them as personal mantras whenever self-doubt creeps in.
5️⃣Engage & Share: Consider sharing your flipped thoughts with a close friend or family member. Encourage them to read the blog and perform the Flip Card Challenge, comparing the positive affirmations you both come up with.
There’s always a chance to rewrite your script… ✍️
See ya Wednesday! 👋
